East of Auschwitz: Mapping of the Holocaust in East and Central Europe

February 14, 2014

Auschwitz is the main symbol of the Holocaust. It wasn’t just a concentration camp. Auschwitz was also a death factory. After WWII, memoirs of survivors, mainly assimilated “Western Jews”, gradually entered into public consciousness. However, Auschwitz, as a symbol, doesn’t include the largest group of Holocaust victims – the mainly Yiddish speaking “Eastern Jews” of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and the Ukraine. Witnesses and chroniclers in Eastern Bloc countries used to be forbidden from describing these victims as Jews. Therefore the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum has undertaken an exhibition that explores the fate of the Jews “East of Auschwitz” through maps of that era.   We welcome your donations.
